Generally, boiler feed water pumps are subjected to extreme mechanical and thermal stresses because of their huge size, high operating pressure and temperature or, rather, temperature gradients. Optimal performance of boiler feed water pumps has great significance not only for the pump designers and manufacturers but also for the operators of pumps in power plants. In this article, the steady and transient operating conditions of one of the two largest pumps ever built in the world of its kind, installed in the Niederaussem lignite-fired power station Pump simulation

Reliability Prediction of a Return Thermal Expansion Joint

An efficient reliability assessment approach is used to estimate the reliability of a return expansion joint. This component is part of a large power generation system. In order to perform the reliability assessment task, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Method (FEM), Fatigue analysis, and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) tools are integrated. The process starts with CFD simulatio...

Performance Evaluation of Nanofluid (Al2O3/H2O-C2H6O2) Based Parabolic Solar Collector Using Both Experimental and CFD Techniques

The present work evaluates the performance of solar collector using Al2O3-C2H6O2-H2O nanofluid as a working fluid through both experimental and CFD analysis. Ethylene-glycol water mixture (40:60 v/v) is used as base fluid, where α-Al2O3 nanoparticle of 20 nm average size is dispersed for the preparation of nanofluid of four different volumetric concentration (vol. conc.) of 0.05, 0.075, 0.1 and...

In-depth analysis of traffic congestion using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling method

This paper introduces computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a numerical approach widely and successfully used in aerospace engineering, to deal with surface traffic flow related problems. After a brief introduction of the physical and mathematical foundations of CFD, this paper develops CFD implementation methodology for modeling traffic problems such as queue/platoon distribution, shockwave prop...

Control Errors in CFD!

Error control in computational uid dynamics (CFD) has been crucial for reliability and e ciency of numerical ow simulations. The roles of truncation and rounding errors in difference approximations are discussed. Truncation error control is reviewed for ODEs. For di erence approximations of PDEs, discretization error control by Richardson extrapolation is outlined. Applications to anisotropic g...

Effect of impeller geometry on performance characteristics of centrifugal compressor

Centrifugal Compressors play an essential role in oil, gas and petrochemical industries. Their extensive usage is due to their smooth operation and high reliability compared to other other compressor types. One of the main characteristics of these turbomachines is their performance curve, which is an important criterion for selecting the appropriate compressor for a desired working condition. I...
